Legislative District 52
Special Election Caucus

Utah State Representative, Carl Wimmer, has tendered his resignation as a State Representative effective January 16th, 2012.

The Salt Lake County Republican Party will be convening a caucus of the Salt Lake County Delegates from Legislative District 52 on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 7:00pm. The Caucus will be held in the Auditorium on the 2nd Floor at the Sandra Lloyd Performing Arts Building – 12830 South Redwood Road, Riverton, UT 84065. Registration for the meeting will begin at 6:30pm and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00pm. You are invited to mingle with the candidates prior to the start of the meeting.

The purpose of the meeting will be for the Salt Lake County Delegates in Legislative District 52 to determine the Republican who will be submitted to the Governor for appointment to fill the remainder of the term.

We encourage all those interested in running for this position to do so. To be eligible to run for this seat you must live in the current Legislative District 52 and be a registered Republican. Legislative District 52 will be reconfigured when redistricting takes effect. Therefore, the prevailing candidate, if they so choose, may be seeking reelection in a different district number in November 2012.

While there will not be a filing deadline (candidates will be nominated from the floor), we ask that all candidates please contact me (Julie Dole), with their name, address, phone number, and email prior to the meeting so their eligibility to be a candidate can be verified. The random candidate speaking and balloting order that was determined January 4, 2012 is: X, G, W, R, D, P, E, C, O, N, F, V, H, T, Y, I, A, L, M, Q, J, B, U, S, K, Z. Each candidate will be given 3 minutes to speak to the delegates prior to the first round of voting. If additional rounds of voting are necessary, further candidate speaking time will be determined by a vote of the delegates.

Below are the candidates who have informed us of their intention to run, to this point.

BYLAW COMMITTEE - 1 Position available:

The current SLCoGOP Bylaw Committee consists of the following 6 members: Larry Jensen, Lyle Decker, Chad Bennion, Dana Dickson, Phil Conder, & Louis Gary Welch. All remaining nominated candidates from September 15th will continue in the race, unless they withdraw and additional nominations will be accepted from the floor.

Kathryn Gritton

Benjamin Thompson

Ben Soholt – I’m running because the general body of the SLCo Central Committee shouldn’t be bothered with changes to the bylaws that aren’t going to help get Republicans elected. I was nominated by Sen. Daniel Thatcher who chaired the Bylaw Committee. The first challenge I will take on will be to simplify the process for electing Bylaw Committee members to prevent the complicated mess we ran into in the last Central Committee Mtg. Please feel free to call me at 801-870-2458 or email jaymond_ben@hotmail.com.
