Salt Lake County Republican Party announces Mass Meetings in 2010

The Salt Lake County Republican Party announced that on March 23, 2010, it will be holding mass meetings on the legislative district level instead of the precinct level to increase participation and make it easier for voters to find their caucus meetings. Previously, the Salt Lake County Republican Party held precinct meetings in each precinct, usually at personal residences of Republicans.

“Currently, there are 836 precincts in Salt Lake County,” said Chairman Thomas Wright. “We felt it was important to centralize the meetings into 31 legislative district locations, rather than 836 precinct locations, to most effectively elect delegates who will select our party’s candidates.”

“This centralization will make our meetings ADA accessible, easier to find and more welcoming to the record number of new participants we are seeing this year,” Wright continued. “By advertising 31 locations located throughout Salt Lake County, participants can show up to a local high school or library in their legislative district and then break out into the same precinct meetings that have been held previously. The process of electing precinct chairs and delegates will be completely unchanged.”

The Salt Lake County Republican Party is expecting record turnout due to the current political climate. Some precincts have had turnout so high in previous years that the home holding the meeting could not accommodate everyone who wanted to attend. And, those were years of poor turnout for Republicans.

“In order to accommodate the high level of attendance we are expecting in 2010, we need to have precinct meetings in locations that can accommodate large groups of people,” Wright said.

Wright added that having the meetings at central locations will allow the party to easily answer questions and distribute a more consistent message to its members.

“We’re showing the public that the Salt Lake County Republican Party wants to include everyone who can support its platform,” Wright said. “We want to have Republicans with different perspectives and backgrounds who support our platform come to a neutral location to become a delegate or precinct chair. We also encourage unaffiliated and independent voters to attend our events and consider registering as Republicans if they feel inclined to do so. This is not a party run by a few power brokers. This is a party of the people. We work hard to encourage people to get involved.”

Precinct caucuses will be held the evening of Tuesday, March 23, 2010. Locations of mass meetings will be posted on www.slcogop.com as they become available.

My friends of the Salt Lake County Council Central Committee District 5,

As your County Council Member I pledge that I will serve you, I will be accessible and accountable to you, my constituents. I commit that I will be consistent and fair as I collaborate with all of our government officials, representatives, and citizens in District Five, as we prioritize and determine important and pressing issues affecting our district. We will work toward the greater good while protecting our cherished Republican values. I promise fiscal responsibility and accountability to ensure our core values are uncompromised, to provide the very best public safety and prevention programs available, and to proactively and intelligently manage the growth of Salt Lake County. Providing services should be accomplished in the most cost effective and efficient manner possible with the least amount of government intrusion. I believe in protection of our Constitutional Rights, Assisting Business to Grow the Economy, Self-Reliance, Protection of Family Values, and Tough Policies on Crime. I also endorse Better Education, Smaller Government, Lower Taxes, Cutting Waste, More Accountability, Alternatives and Ideas Promoting Energy Independence, and Environmental Policies Based on Scientific Evidence. It is my belief that we can continue to promote and enhance these values, among many others, while most importantly safeguarding our tax dollars!

During last years’ campaign one of my endorsements came from our Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff. Please let me share with you what he stated on one of my mailers. “Steve has shown his commitment to the safety and security of Salt Lake County residents during his 27 years as a law enforcement officer. Steve has that rare quality of putting people first, and is known for his honesty, integrity, and doing what is best for the public. During these uncertain times, Steve is exactly the kind of council member Salt Lake County needs.” We almost unseated Mr. Horiuchi last year. Even though we narrowly lost, I promised then that I would be our candidate for the next available council seat. Our County Party leaders have continually asked for candidates to commit to run for a minimum of two, and preferably three times to up our success rate. I now ask for your support in affording me this honor and opportunity to complete the final year of Councilman Allen’s term. This will start my election bid and campaign plans for reelection as an incumbent next November. I will utilize all of my talents and capabilities to serve you to enhance our quality of life. I promise honesty, openness and sincerity as your council member. Please afford me your vote and support on Saturday the19th, as well as in the coming year as I prepare for the November 2010 election.

Sincerely,
Steven L. DeBry

Fellow Republicans,

My name is David Pyne and I live in West Jordan along with my wife, Donelle, and our four daughters. I am running for Salt Lake County Council because I believe Councilman Jeff Allen has done an excellent job in representing Republican principles while serving on the council and that it is vitally important for us to replace Jeff with another principled Republican to ensure that the interests of the Republican plurality in our County are represented. I believe that electing a principled conservative like myself to replace Jeff on the County Council is the first step in taking back control of the Council and our County this next year. If elected, I will stand up to the Democrat majority on the Council and fight their attempts to further increase taxes and fees on hard-working Salt Lake County families in these difficult recessionary times as well as enact additional domestic partnership benefits and gay rights legislation. In exchange for your support, I promise to champion our shared Republican values.

I am a lifelong Republican activist. I am strongly pro-life and pro-Second Amendment. I currently serve as a Senate District Chair and as a member of the Salt Lake County Republican Party Executive Committee. I also served as Governor Herbert’s campaign chairman here in the County when he ran for re-election as Lt. Governor. In addition, I am a former United States Army officer and currently serve as a Vice President of the Association of the United States Army’s Utah chapter. I have met with senior military leaders throughout the state to find out what we can do to better support our brave soldiers and veterans. I have also served on the West Jordan General Plan Committee for the past year. I am running on a platform of fiscal responsibility and cutting wasteful spending. I believe it is important to increase transparency and accountability of our government and public officials. If elected, I promise to work hard to prudently manage country growth, avoid wasteful and costly duplication of municipal services and maintain highway access, TRAX and county roads. In addition, I will make it a top priority to improve public safety. We can and must do more to support law enforcement and clamp down on gang and drug-related violence in order to keep our streets safe.

I have had the privilege of talking to many of you and look forward to speaking with those of you I have been unable to reach later this week. I would love to hear from you and find out more about the issues and concerns that you care about most. Please feel free to call me at 801-656-9459 or e-mail me at david@pyneforcountycouncil.com. You can also visit my campaign website at www.pyneforcountycouncil.com to learn more about me and see the growing list of elected officials and grassroots Republican activists who are supporting my candidacy. I would very much appreciate your vote at the Special Caucus Election on Saturday December 19th!

I would be an ideal appointee for Salt Lake County Council Position #5 because I bring a fresh perspective, proven track record of strong leadership and the ability to achieve positive results within the community.

Having been in Republican politics for over 10 years, I understand that in order to be a good political leader one must first understand the current and past issues the community or county is facing. I was first involved in politics because I wanted to be informed on what was happening in my community where I had lived for over 25 years. I felt that there needed to be a change and that I could be the voice for our city of 16,000. I was elected to be mayor and took the task willingly and with an open mind. I started looking at what issues my community had been facing and also the concerns of the citizens. My experience as mayor taught me to look at the longevity and the future of the decisions we were making as a council. My number one priority if I am to be appointed to County Council will be to look at the issues that Salt Lake County is facing and how we can deal with those issues while holding to the values of fiscal responsibility, small government and accountability.

As a certified Project Manager and owner of my own consulting business for the past 8 years, I know what it means to be a strong leader. I have been tasked with structuring large scale multi billion dollar projects; my abilities to step forward as a productive and positive leader have garnered me respect and a solid reputation within my industry. The same principles that I use to approach my business, are the same principles I would use in Salt Lake County - it is necessary to have a mapped out and sustainable plan for the county to succeed. I believe that my experience as a certified Project Manager will bring a new approach to how issues are presented and handled within Salt Lake County. I believe in a strong sense of community and small government and feel that is exactly what our county needs. I believe that my experience not only in politics but as a strong businesswoman would make me the ideal candidate for Salt Lake County Council.

Message to Central Committee-County Council District 5

Who has the experience to hit the ground running and at once make a positive impact on Salt Lake County government? This is an essential question because whoever is appointed to the District 5 seat will have to immediately help navigate the County through economic challenges while running for election in 2010. I can do this because I’ve done it before. I served for 10 years as a Salt Lake County Commissioner, with full responsibility for all County operations, budgets, services and taxes. I have a thorough understanding of county government. But my involvement has not been recent so I have no axes to grind or hidden agendas. I have proven I can keep District 5 in Republican hands: I have won three county-wide elections in Salt Lake County.

I am known for my budgeting abilities. I helped steer the County through the last big recession, at the time the largest since World War II. During the time I served, the County’s population grew by 200,000, yet we provided quality services while avoiding tax increases. We did it with 5-year budgeting, attrition, streamlining departments, and prudent privatization. We privatized more than any other government in Utah-possibly more than all the rest combined. My successes included economic development, transportation, long-range planning, open and responsive government, and public safety. I was a leader among elected officials locally, statewide and nationally.

Since my service with Salt Lake County I have been an executive with software and Internet companies. In recent years I have been a consultant in communications, technology and public policy. I co-founded The Exoro Group. I designed and edited Utah Policy Daily. I now work independently. (See the Salt Lake Tribune article at http://www.sltrib.com/ci_12934879) Feel free to contact me if you have any questions (801-979-1099 or Bart@BartBarker.com). I hope I can count on your vote.

We had our Central Committee Meeting at Merit Medical with more than 250 people in attendance!!

The Chairman has decided to hold legislative district caucuses and the Executive Committee supports his position. Davis, Utah and Tooele counties as well as the Democrats in Salt Lake County already hold district caucuses - so this is nothing new. There are many benefits to holding the district caucuses for attendees such as parking, ADA accessibility and the candidates can visit many more voters/delegates in one night. The district body will meet together at the beginning then break up into precincts for their precinct caucuses. See the press release here: Press Release 12-2009. There will be Precinct Chair training prior to March so don’t panic!! You will have the opportunity to learn what to do!!

Thomas also unveiled his 10 in 2010 campaign where any voter can be involved in the SL County Republican party and potentially receive rewards!! Just commit to completing 3 of 9 things on the list and make a donation to the party! You can download the 10 in 2010 pledge form under “Party Docs”. It’s just that simple. When all of us do a little we can accomplish a lot!

There were 4 bylaws changes that the Bylaws committee recommended (see county website for more information) that all passed. There was also a proposed bylaw amendment by Lyle Decker regarding “Electing Candidates at Convention” that did not pass. Basically, it would have decreased the 60% threshold for candidates to a majority to nominate a Party Candidate.

Election for Treasurer was held and Corie Chan won as the only nominee. She has 14 years of campaign finance and compliance and was born in Utah. Be sure you get to meet her.

And finally, Senate District 10 held an election to replace Julie Dole who is now the county political director. Four candidates ran; Jeff Haaga, Gary Welch, Jeffery Morton and Julie Holbrook. It took 2 rounds of balloting and now Julie Holbrook is now Senate District 10 Chair.

Anyway, the county party is moving forward, making a difference and we appreciate all you do.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!
